Your packing list for Nambung National Park depends heavily on when you visit and how long you stay. Daytime visitors need sun protection and water. Sunset and stargazing groups require warm layers for cold desert nights.

What should I wear to the Pinnacles during the day?

Wear light, breathable clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and sturdy closed-toe shoes.

There is very little shade in the desert. The yellow sand gets very hot during the day. Summer temperatures frequently exceed 35°C (95°F). Protect your feet from the heat and rough limestone. Wear closed-toe walking shoes rather than sandals.

What to wear for a sunset and stargazing tour?

Bring a warm jacket, a beanie, and multiple layers.

Temperatures in the desert drop sharply after dark. Even if the afternoon feels hot, the evening will be cold. If you book a 9 to 11-hour guided trip from Perth, pack extra layers. Keep your warm gear on the bus until the sun goes down.

Do I need a fly net at the Pinnacles?

Yes, a face fly net is highly recommended during the warmer months.

Flies can be a major nuisance in Western Australia. A cheap head net makes your walk along the 1.2-kilometer Desert View trail comfortable. Pair it with a wide-brimmed hat to keep the netting off your skin.

What gear should I pack for the Pinnacles Desert?

Pack plenty of drinking water, a red-light torch, and sunscreen.

There is no drinking water available out on the desert trail. Carry all the water you need for your visit. If you stay for stargazing, bring a torch with a red light setting. Red light preserves your night vision. This allows you to see the stars more clearly.

What camera gear is best for the Pinnacles?

Bring a camera or smartphone with night-mode capabilities.

The lack of light pollution makes Nambung National Park excellent for astrophotography. To capture the stars above the 3.5-meter tall limestone pillars, bring a tripod. This helps keep your device steady during long exposures.

Checklist for a Pinnacles day trip

Use this simple checklist to ensure you have the right gear for your desert visit.

Double-check your bag before starting the 2-hour drive from Perth. Pack your National Park Pass if you hold one. This waives the $17 AUD daily vehicle entry fee.
